Hong Kong-based fashion label Percy Lau is the brainchild of the eponymous young founder and creative director. Lau graduated from Central Saint Martins with a BA in jewellery design in 2013, and in October of the same year launched her own eyewear label. Soon after graduation she won the International Talent Support YKK Award, and in the following year presented her first collection at Capsule Paris. Ever since, Lau’s work has been featured in magazines including Vogue Italia, Dazed & Confused and Harper’s Bazaar. The designer finds her inspiration in the amalgamation of science and nature, incorporating elements from both into her avant-garde eyewear pieces. Lau’s designs are not plain accessories; she wants to open people’s eyes on processes of human evolution and the functions of the body.
An oil painting from 1890 by French artist William-Adolphe Bouguereau inspired Lau’s commissioned work for “The Future of Fashion is Now”. The designer translated the subject matter of L’Amour et Psyché, enfants to her handcrafted sculpture of a modern-day cherub. Baptizing her angel NOW, Lau’s work embodies the coming together of the past and the future —including an iPhone and, of course, a pair of glasses. NOW references the art of the past, but also reflect two possibilities regarding the origin of humankind: “One, we went through evolution. Two, there is a creator who created us. This piece of work shows the combination of the two concepts that form us today.”
